Where does Timor's beans come from?
The Region

The Timor coffee region, encompassing towns like Aileu, Ermera, and Liquica, is a vibrant coffee-producing area. Home to over 2,000 small-scale farmers, each cultivating land at altitudes of 1,000-1,400 meters, the region is known for its rich, aromatic coffee. The cooperative approach, supported by initiatives like the Asia Development Bank, focuses on sustainable and ethical practices. These high-altitude farms benefit from a climate that nurtures distinctive coffee flavors, marked by a commitment to quality and community development. This region, blending tradition with innovation, is rapidly emerging as a key player in the global coffee scene.

The Farm

In Timor's towns of Aileu, Ermera, and Liquica, the Cooperativa Haburas Kafe Organiku unites 2,172 farmers, each tending to just over a hectare of land at altitudes between 1,000-1,400 meters above sea level. This cooperative emerged from a Technical Assistance grant project by the Asia Development Bank, initially involving 4,200 farmers. Over three years, these farmers received extensive training in various aspects of coffee cultivation, including pre- and post-harvest practices, nursery management, and financial literacy, with a focus on gender sensitivity. This initiative was geared towards supporting the region's rehabilitation and enhancing the quality and quantity of coffee production. The co-op, certified in both fair trade and organic practices, represents a commitment to sustainable and ethical farming. The farmers' dedication and motivation, nurtured through comprehensive training and a shared vision for excellence, are integral to the unique quality of the coffee produced here. Their efforts are aimed not just at current success but at continuous improvement, setting a standard for specialty coffee production in the region.

Process & Harvest

Fully Washed coffee is meticulously processed, where the cherries are pulped to remove the outer skin and then thoroughly washed to eliminate residual mucilage. This method results in a clean, bright cup with pronounced acidity and distinct flavor notes, making it a favorite among coffee enthusiasts.
